damn you blueberry boat

what is happening to my musical sensibility....i'm starting to really enjoy almost anything that sounds new and inventive, and i can't tell if it's good or not, just that i enjoy it for being different. case-in-point: the fiery furnaces. mini operettas? how does this fit in with anything i've loved in the past? how? how? is this just a symptom of aging? maybe i've developed such a distaste for modern-day bubble-gum culture that different always equals good? i dont' want to be some sort of pedantic musical elitist (don't know what a musical elitist is? read practically any review from pitchfork media) that thinks something is good just because it's obscure and strange. is this positive evolution or regression? help me jerry, help me!

i guess what i'm really asking is whether or not anyone else likes the fiery furnaces.

album of the jour: rachel goswell waves are universal

I'm pretty sure that I have a burgeoning blog crush on you. Nongirlfriend might too. Does Paxil affect your libido? Sheesh, it did mine, and sadly coincided with the one period in my life when I got regular nookie. Sometimes I wonder if God was playing a horrible joke on me, or if it was just that the anxiety-lowering qualities made it possible to establish said nookie partnership. Probing questions.

I kind of agree with you, phizz. I've listened to the CD a few times, and while certain "arias" of their mini-operettas are good, the other parts really piss me off. I think there is a bit of "if it's different, it must be good" going on here. And, of course, too bad for the next band to sound remotely like FF (if that's possible), because they'll be run out of town on a rail for being "unoriginal."

murph - upon the first few listens of the album i would agree that those select few parts (of almost every track) are impressive, but others are discouraging.....but after a while i find that even (or maybe especially) those unorthodoxed parts are what captivates me... the off-beat parts... etc. i hope that you'll give it enough of a listen(s) to make an honest evaluation (as i very much trust you are capable of) and offer up some feedback. also, since you are a music buff(fffff), have you listened to my top ten fav. cd's? i would really love a second opinion (that doesn't come from my heroin-injecting friends).

bunny - i'll respond later, i'm too fucked up right now to write anything cohesive

I don't know - I've never heard of The Fiery Furnaces. Does that make me a total loser? Don't answer that.

Hey Phizz, I'm familiar with a lot of the stuff on your greatest albums page. I applaud you for having the cajones to give GOO the credit it deserves. I am surprised by the Sleater-Kinney album you chose as your fave, but probably only because I'm partial to ONE BEAT. Belly and Juliana Hatfield bring back some nice memories, and I'll have to check out Idlewild. ... but where's all the pre-1980 stuff?

pre-1980... i confess that my musical awareness before the eighties consists omainly f just the sex pistols, velvet underground, and devo. not a classic rock fan, if that's what you're talking about.

GOO - i think is heads and shoulders above Daydream Nation, which everyone crams their jeans for. don't get me wrong, i love it... but i'm IN LOVE with goo.

As for Blueberry Boat, I am going to give it more chances because I do feel that it could be a "grower," but I really need a good break from it first.

Top albums list is up on Life Goes Off.

wow, deconstructing is an understatement

I'm on the fence on the Fiery Furnaces issue, I don't hate them, but for me they fall into the category of "a little goes a long way." I am glad to see Scissor Sisters on your music of the week though. This was one of my favorite cds of the summer. between the self-titled release and the compilation of b-sides and rarities I snagged off a friend they've enjoyed most-favored nation status in my cd player for some time now.

yeah, when i got that scissor sisters cd i had a hard time listening to anything else. what's odd is that it's reminiscent of the bee gees and elton john and pink floyd and george michael, none of whome i particularly care for... but i really love this cd. up there in my best of '04.
