any inkling whatsoever

the thoughtful u.s. department of labor has launched a website aimed at helping homeless people find jobs.  that is, a website, to help the homeless... finally, a good idea.

"...had I had any inkling whatsoever that the people were going to fly airplanes into buildings, we would have moved heaven and earth to save the country..."

- george w. bush on april 13,  2004

"FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York."

- presidential daily briefing, august 6, 2001

i guess heaven and earth were in crawford at that time.

the thing is, that presidential dialy briefing is, like, over a page long.  i mean, who has time to read that?  screw this, i'm going on vacation.

well, i understand that if the country is under attack then the president should be made safe, and moving about from place to place affords that. my big qualm (one of them anyway) with that whole immediate-rsponse situation is that, upon hearing that the second plane hit the wtc, he remained in a school for about half an hour. personally i'd want a high-probability target, like the president, as far away from schoolchildren as possible.

Yeah, but in Shreveport? Then Nebraska? Then they broadcast Bush with a bullhorn on the rubble like he'd been there all along? And the GOP even sold pictures of Bush from that day as a fundraiser! I guess it must've been expensive to make him look decisive and all.

you are preaching to the choir. the only thing i think that makes sense is that the emergency procedure of keeping the president moving during an attack is a good one.

the exploitation of of the disaster for political gain is of course reprehensible. as was the subsequent foolhardy action of congress, and now we'll be reaping the consequences for a long time. well, until the rapture comes anyway.
